Pumps 101 — Positive Displacement
The choice for viscous, shear-sensitive, and metered duty. Positive displacement pumps move a fixed volume per revolution, so flow stays steady even as pressure and viscosity climb.
The Principle
A positive displacement (PD) pump captures a fixed volume of product in a cavity and mechanically forces it to the outlet. Unlike a centrifugal pump, it moves nearly the same volume per revolution regardless of downstream pressure, so flow stays steady even as viscosity or back-pressure rises.
PD covers a family of designs. Rotary lobe and circumferential piston pumps use rotating rotors and are the sanitary workhorses for viscous product and clean-in-place duty. Twin screw pumps handle both product and CIP gently and efficiently in one unit. Twin-piston systems move whole-muscle and large-particulate product while holding its shape. Progressive cavity and gear pumps round out the range for viscous and metered work.
Running at lower speeds, most PD pumps are gentle on shear-sensitive product, and nearly all are self-priming — a combination that makes them the default for anything thick, delicate, or metered.

Common Questions
What's the difference between a lobe pump and a centrifugal pump?
A lobe pump is positive displacement: it moves a fixed volume per turn and holds flow steady against changing pressure and viscosity, which suits thick or shear-sensitive product. A centrifugal pump is better for thin, high-flow duty.
Which positive displacement pump is gentlest on product?
For whole-muscle and large particulate, twin-piston systems hold product shape best. Rotary lobe and progressive cavity pumps are gentle on viscous and shear-sensitive liquids when run at low speed.
Can one pump handle both product and clean-in-place?
Yes. Twin screw and certain rotary lobe pumps are chosen partly because they move product and run CIP duty in the same unit, which simplifies the line.
